Her Majesty’s Inspectorate (HMI) assess each Fire and Rescue Service in England. They grade three main areas, known as pillars and these are Effectiveness, Efficiency, and People.
Each pillar is graded as either outstanding, good, requires improvement or inadequate.
The grading for each pillar, provides the public and the Fire and Rescue Service with a summary and will promote improvements where necessary.
They are not intended to advise on specific standards or to be exhaustive lists of how HMI expect Fire and Rescue Service's to perform in these main areas.
The grading criteria considers existing National Operational Guidance and any new standards as they are agreed and adopted when assessing Fire and Rescue Services.
