This week it was Red Squads turn to complete Swift Water Rescue training at Tees Barrage.
The week started off in the classroom covering different aspects of the course, getting familiar with features, types of waves and the dangers within the water and issues that could arise while carrying out rescues.
Once we familiarised ourselves with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), we headed up to Tee’s Barrage bright and early to gain an early start on the water. On our first swim attempt it quickly became apparent that the strong currents were not to be taken lightly.
Three full days on the water certainly helped with our development. We learnt how to carry out different types of rescues in rapid conditions and how the water behaves, as well as how we can use the water to our advantage during a rescue. We got plenty of exposure to the water, each taking it in turns to be the team leader and show off our skills.
We finished the week by sitting our exams and everyone passed with extremely high marks. Well done everyone!
