Humberside Fire and Rescue Service (HFRS) is celebrating after winning the award for ‘Best Internal Occupational Health and Safety For Organisations Of More Than 250 Staff’. The Health and Safety team from the Service were presented with the William Jackson Trophy at the Occupational Health and Safety Group annual awards in Hull on Friday 9 May.
The team were commened for introducing a new database that allowed them to identify themes and trends of reported illness or injury. From this data anaylais, it was identifed there was a need for training to given to all employees relating to lifiting and handling to reduce back injuries. The training was delivered as an e-learning package to all HFRS employees and also improvements were made to the Health and Safety information communicated to visitors.
Steve Fuller, Health and Safety Manager at Humberside Fire and Rescue, said: “We have introduced health and safety as a standing agenda item at all Management meetings and any issues raised are fed directly back to the Health and Safety team. Also, there has been a push to ensure that all near misses and incidents are recored on a central database.”
HFRS Health and Safety team found themselves in a strong category, competing with repuatable businesses and prevoius winners, such as BAE Systems, Associated British Ports (ABP) , Kingston Communications (KC) and Hull University.
Speaking at the event, Steve said “I am extremely proud that the Service has received this award as the Health and Safety team has worked hard to promote a positive attitude and culture towards health and safety across the Service using a number of different communication methods and providing a greater presence outside of the office.
“I believe that every employee has contributed toward this award by their actions and as such they should be proud to work for the Service.”
