Humberside Fire and Rescue Service is proud to officially open its new Howden Fire Station, marking a significant investment in both firefighter safety and the communities it serves.
The £2.7 million project has seen the complete redevelopment of the station on its existing site, replacing the previous building which had reached the end of its operational life after serving the community for more than 60 years.
Howden Fire Station was originally established in 1964 and is crewed by On-Call firefighters who respond to incidents across Howden and the surrounding areas,
Designed to meet the needs of a modern fire and rescue service, the new station provides enhanced operational and welfare facilities for On-Call firefighters who serve Howden and the surrounding area.
The development includes:
- A new appliance bay
- Improved changing
- Shower and welfare facilities
- Meeting spaces for our local community to use
- Multi-purpose room
Alongside enhancements to the existing training tower to support firefighter development and training.
The building has been designed in line with the latest guidance on firefighter contamination, equality and dignity, helping create a safer, healthier and more inclusive working environment.
Sustainability has also been a key consideration throughout the project. Replacing a station previously heated by oil, the new facility incorporates roof-mounted solar photovoltaic panels and an air source heat pump, enabling it to operate primarily on self-generated electricity and supporting the Service's wider ambition to reduce carbon emissions and achieve net zero.
The project forms part of Humberside Fire and Rescue Service's wider Capital Estates Programme, which is focused on delivering modern, fit-for-purpose facilities that support frontline service delivery and meet the evolving needs of communities across the Humber region.
Chief Fire Officer Phil Shillito said, "The opening of our new Howden Fire Station represents a significant investment in our people, our communities and the future of the Service.
This modern facility provides our On-Call firefighters with the environment, equipment and facilities they need to continue delivering an excellent service to the people of Howden and the surrounding areas.
As part of our ongoing commitment to investing in our estate, this station has been designed to support firefighter wellbeing, improve operational effectiveness and ensure we remain equipped to meet future challenges."
Lucy Wileman, from Estates Programme Manager from our Joint Estates Services said, “Whilst Howden Fire Station, like any construction project came with its own unique challenges along the way, to see the finished station open is a very proud moment for all of us on the project team.
“We have thoroughly enjoyed working in collaboration with our Fire Service colleagues and contractors to design and build a facility that will serve the Howden community for many years to come, and it is great to see the fire crews return to their permanent home.”
The successful delivery of the new station further strengthens the ongoing partnership between Humberside Fire and Rescue Service and the Joint Estates Service with Humberside Police, with both organisations committed to investing in facilities that support effective emergency response and provide long-term value for local communities.
The Service would also like to recognise Mike and Linda Hall for their support throughout the construction project. By providing access to their land, they enabled contractors to maximise the available working space on site, helping to ensure the successful delivery of the development.
