What comes to mind when you think of a firefighter?
Blue lights. Flashing sirens. Rushing to help people in a fire.
Putting out fires is still an important part of the job, but firefighters do much more than that.
Today's firefighters help people after road crashes, rescue people who are trapped, respond to floods and storms and attend medical emergencies, and much more.
But their work isn't only about responding when something goes wrong.
Firefighters also visit homes, school, businesses and community groups to help people stay safe and prevent emergencies from happening. They work with people of all ages and backgrounds to make communities safer.
That's why firefighters need more than strength and practical skills. They need to be kind, calm, good at talking to people and ready to help others.
