With the sunshine making a welcome return and the summer holidays in full swing, it’s the perfect excuse to fire up the grill or head out for a picnic. But while we’re soaking up the sun, let’s also do our bit to keep our communities and countryside safe from fire.
Help us prevent fires and protect our green spaces:
- Put litter in a bin or take it home
- Make sure cigarettes are fully extinguished
- No campfires or BBQs (including disposable ones) in open spaces – they can easily spark fires and harm wildlife
If you see a fire:
- Use the what3words app to pinpoint your location
- Don’t try to tackle it yourself – stay at a safe distance
- Call 999 straightaway
If you see anyone starting fires deliberately, you can report it anonymously to Firestoppers:

Planning a BBQ at home?
Here are some top tips to enjoy the heat without the hazards:
- Never leave your BBQ unattended
- Set it up on a flat surface, away from sheds, trees and shrubs
- Keep children, pets and games well clear
- Have a bucket of water or sand nearby – just in case
- Let it cool completely before moving or disposing of it
Heading out to the countryside?
Please leave the BBQ at home. Disposable BBQs can cause grass fires, are often left behind as litter and pose a real risk to wildlife.
Let’s enjoy the summer safely and protect the places we love.
