Humberside Fire and Rescue Service is reminding the public to visit their local tip with excessive garden waste and bulky household items to reduce instances of fly-tipping.

Call outs to general waste fires in both urban and rural areas have increased over recent weeks and are putting an unnecessary strain on the Service and other agencies during the response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Bin collections will be maintained throughout the lockdown period by local authorities and their committed staff, but, unlike 'Lockdown 1', household waste collection centres (HWRCs) in all local authority areas will also remain open meaning that householders have no need to store bulky items at home or dispose of them illegally.

The build up of household waste has led to some illegal fly-tipping from homeowners themselves or unscrupulous and unregulated collectors which then becomes a target for nuisance fires in alleyways or in rural lay-bys.

There may be strict distancing measures in place and a restriction on the number of vehicles allowed on site, so the public should restict their trips to the tip to those which are absolutely necessary.

For the avoidance of any doubt, trips to waste recycling sites are included on the gov.uk website as permissable reasons to travel during the cureent lockdown perod:

The majority of public services will continue and you will be able to leave home to visit them. These include:

  • Jobcentre Plus sites
  • courts and probation services
  • civil registrations offices
  • passport and visa services
  • services provided to victims
  • waste or recycling centres
  • getting an MOT, if you need to drive when lawfully leaving home
