Falls are one of the most common causes of injury. They can affect anyone, whether due to health conditions, age, or hazards in the home and they can have a big impact not just physically, but emotionally too. This Falls Awareness Week, we’re joining organisations across the UK to raise awareness, share practical advice and help reduce the risk of falls in our communities.

Top tips to prevent falls at home

  • Keep walkways clear – Remove clutter, loose rugs and trailing wires.
  • Improve lighting – Make sure hallways, stairs and rooms are well-lit.
  • Use handrails and grab bars – Especially in bathrooms and on stairs.
  • Wear sensible footwear – Avoid slippers that are loose or worn out.
  • Stay active – Gentle exercise can improve balance and strength.
  • Check medications – Some prescriptions can affect balance or coordination.
  • Get your eyes tested – Poor vision increases the risk of tripping.

We’re also proud to highlight our long-standing partnership with local health providers at City Health Care Partnership, as well as our dedicated staff who are part of Hull F.I.R.S.T (Falls Intervention Response Safety Team). Together, we’ve helped thousands of people across Hull stay safe and independent in their homes, reducing unnecessary ambulance call-outs and making sure individuals receive the right care at the right time.

This joined-up approach is a key part of our commitment to community care, and it continues to make a real difference.
