Humberside Fire Authority confirmed at its Fire Authority meeting on 27 March 2026 the appointment of our next Chief Fire Officer and Chief Executive, Niall McKiniry. Following a rigorous selection process, Niall was appointed to the role.
Niall joined Humberside Fire and Rescue Service (HFRS) in 1995 as a firefighter and has progressed through the ranks becoming the Deputy Chief Fire Officer in October 2022 and now Chief Fire Officer.
Before his recent roles on the Executive Board and the Strategic Leadership Team, Niall has served at various fire stations across the region including Bridlington, East Hull, Scunthorpe and Hull Central, in addition to a variety of specialist and senior roles at Service Headquarters.
Niall said, “I’m incredibly proud to be appointed Chief Fire Officer for Humberside Fire and Rescue Service. Having worked alongside Chief Fire Officer Phil Shillito, I’ve seen first‑hand the dedication, professionalism and pride that runs through every part of this Service.
"I will be working with Phil on the transition over the coming months and feel that we are in positive position as a Service.
"As we look ahead, my focus will be on making further improvements and building on our strengths - our strong partnerships, our commitment to safer communities and the professionalism of our people. It’s a privilege to take on this responsibility to lead a Service that I have spent all my career working in and I’m committed to serving our communities and putting them at the centre of everything we do.”
Niall will formally take up the role on 19 October 2026. Until then, he will continue working closely with Chief Fire Officer Phil Shillito to ensure a smooth transition and maintain our delivery of an outstanding fire and rescue service across the Humber region.
