Humberside Fire and Rescue Service is supporting a national campaign to remind smokers that their habit not only harms their health but also poses a serious fire risk to their homes and loved ones. A recent study found that each cigarette smoked reduces life expectancy by approximately 20 minutes.

For smokers who are not ready to quit, it’s crucial to follow these safety tips:

  • Never smoke in bed
  • Always use a proper ashtray and avoid discarding cigarettes directly into a bin
  • Never leave a lit cigarette, cigar, or pipe unattended as they can easily tip over and ignite a fire
  • Be extra cautious if you smoke while tired, under the influence of alcohol, or taking prescription medication
  • Store matches and lighters securely, out of children’s reach
