Reds on fire in the Battle of the Blues and Twos

7 June 2014

Humberside Fire and Rescue Service took the battle of the Blues and Twos with a hard fought 2-0 victory against Humberside Police at Hull University earlier today.

East Riding County FA kindly put on the inter-service fixture on the 3G pitch at Hull University. Part of a nationwide initiative, the Reds v Blues fixture came exactly a week before England begin their 2014 World Cup campaign in Brazil.

A Dave Bristow strike after six minutes put the Reds in front in driving rain. The lead was doubled towards the end of the half when a Matt Dixon effort took a slight deflection and ended up in the back of the net.

In what was always a physical encounter, the Blues had sustained pressure in the second half, but a superb back four and the sensational Adam Wood between the sticks held firm.

HFRS ended the game with only 11 fit players after a couple of nasty knocks, but captain Mike Nicholson kept the team together to run out deserving winners in torrid conditions.

Thanks to the East Riding County FA for hosting the match. All involved look forward to another ‘blue light’ battle some time in the future.
