With energy bills still a concern, many households turn to portable heaters for warmth. While useful, they carry risks if used incorrectly.

Top safety tips:

  • Keep heaters clear of curtains, furniture and clothes.
  • Never use heaters to dry laundry.
  • Plug electric heaters directly into the wall, not extension leads.
  • Turn heaters off and let them cool before moving.
  • Never use portable gas or electric heaters in bathrooms.
  • Only use portable gas heaters in well-ventilated rooms - never in bedrooms and bathrooms.

Prevention essentials:

  • Make sure you have working smoke alarms on every floor of your home.
  • If you use appliances that burn fuel, install a carbon monoxide alarm.
  • Regularly testing your alarms gives you and your family crucial time to escape safely in an emergency.

Staying warm should never come at the cost of safety. Protect your home and your family this winter.
