Has your new year’s resolution fallen by the wayside already? Then why not make one that could save your life by checking your smoke alarm is in good working order?

As part of a smoke alarm safety initiative, Humberside Fire and Rescue Service is asking people to make sure smoke alarms are fitted on each level of their home and in good working order by testing them regularly.

Steve Duffield, Community Safety Manager at Humberside Fire and Rescue Service, said: “January is an opportunity for a fresh start so we are encouraging everyone to make sure they have enough smoke alarms in their home and that they work. Smoke alarms can only do their job if they are in good working order.”

The advice comes after a family recently escape unharmed from a house fire in Hull after their smoke alarm sounded.

“The family were lucky to escape unharmed, a smoke alarm can give the few extra seconds needed to escape in a fire. While the majority of homes across the region now have an alarm fitted, many of these alarms may need replacing as the average lifespan is ten years. I urge people to make sure their alarms are up to date,” Steve added.

To keep your alarms in working order:

Make sure there is at least one smoke alarm on every level of your home

Test your smoke alarms by pushing the button every month

Check that your smoke alarms are less than 10 years old

Fit smoke alarms on landings and hallways

Take a moment to check on your loved ones who may need help to ensure they’re fully protected

“A smoke alarm can offer vital protection for you and your loved ones, but some people simply fit and forget – they don’t know if it might be coming to the end of its lifespan or not working at all. For most of us, there is nothing more important than keeping our loved ones safe and secure. So if your alarm is getting past its best or your top floor is missing an alarm of its own, make your New Year’s resolution to fit new ones, test them on the first of every month and protect your loved ones in 2015,” Steve said.
