A Scunthorpe business owner has been fined for breaching fire safety regulations following enforcement action by Humberside Fire and Rescue Service.
Mr Stavros Mappouras, owner of Bosom Buddies, located at 254-256 Ashby High Street, Scunthorpe, appeared in court where he pleaded guilty to an offence under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.
The prosecution related to Mr Mappouras being in breach of an Enforcement Notice, required him to ensure a safe means of escape from the accommodation above his business should a fire occur in any part of the building.
Following the hearing, Mr Mappouras was ordered to pay a total of £8,685.01.
Lynsey Driver, Protection Manager for Humberside Fire and Rescue Service, said: “This case sends a clear message: fire safety regulations are in place to protect lives. Failure to comply not only puts lives at risk but can also result in significant financial and legal consequences.
“While we are thankful that a fire did not occur at these premises, the risk of death or serious injury was so great that we had no option but to pursue this prosecution.
“I urge business owners to seek advice from us if they are unsure of their responsibilities. Our experienced team are keen to help owners understand the legislation and meet the necessary safety standards for businesses.
“Most business owners are happy to work with the Fire Service, but those who ignore advice and flout the law must understand they may be subject to investigation and prosecution.”
