Week 1: Introduction and ice breaker session
Following a welcome and introductions from the District Group Manager, individuals will be invited to share their aims and aspirations so that staff and support them in setting realistic goals and targets. A discussion around the Service’s Core Code of Ethics by our Head of HR will provide an insight into how these are implemented and embedded in our organisation. The inclusive, supportive learning environment will also be discussed, with information on the Service’s reasonable adjustments policy and disability passport also being discussed. The official Rookie Red joining pack, including a personal development folder, bespoke to the individual, will also be issued.
Week 2: Ladders
A practical demonstration will provide individuals the opportunity to perform a ladder lift, ladder carry, ladder extension, ladder climb and leg lock. This week will also include team building exercises to develop problem solving abilities, strengthen communication within the group and promote collaborative working.
Week 3: Fire safety – working within our communities
The safety of our community is a vital and significant part of a Firefighter’s role. During Fire Safety week, individuals will have the opportunity to learn more around the Service’s prevention and protection activities and understand how these activities shape our resources in response to our community’s needs/protection. Individual’s will be invited to discuss what they perceive to be the needs of their own communities and put forward ideas in this regard.
Week 4: Fitness
This week will see individuals invited to try various elements of the entry fitness test, such as the equipment carry and hose running. Where areas of improvement are required, individuals will be offered support, such as fitness plans and nutritional information, should it be required.
Week 5: Confined space and breathing apparatus
This week offers an understanding behind wearing of breathing apparatus, crawling in spaces and walking in dark and cosmetic smoke. All individuals will be fully supported by our staff during these scenarios.
Week 6: Ropes and manual dexterity
This week will focus of an explanation of when and how ropes are used for operational incidents and a hands-on opportunity to use ropes, karabiners, knots and lines.
Week 7: Interview preparation
This week will concentrate on the interview stage of the recruitment process. There will be a discussion around reasonable adjustments and the support available should it be required. There will be a discussion around the types of questions that may be asked as part of the interview, a discussion around the information available on our website to assist with an individual’s interview preparation.
Week 8: Online tests
An understanding as to the types of online tests that may form part of the recruitment process.
Week 9: Water awareness
With its coastline, rivers and lakes Humberside Fire and Rescue Service is often called to respond to many water-related incidents. This week will look at some of those incidents, the equipment used and the training that is provided to operational staff. There will be an opportunity to try on water rescue kit and learn more about the training involved.
Week 10: Wash up and review session
This week will be a review of individual personal development plans, with further support being offered, if required. It will also include a discussion around the information that has been shared throughout the 10-weeks and the opportunity to revisit any specific areas again.
