Millions of households across the UK could be missing out on crucial safety information due to failing to register over 40 million large appliances currently in use in their homes. This is despite openly acknowledging the transformative impact of these machines and their heavy reliance on them.
With an estimated 133 million fridges, washing machines and ovens in UK homes, nearly a third of households admit they have never or rarely registered their large appliances. This lack of registration makes it extremely difficult to trace these appliances should a safety repair or recall become necessary.
Households are being encouraged to register all appliances – whether small or large – to ensure manufacturers can contact them if needed. This applies to newly purchased items, long-installed machines, or those acquired second-hand or nearly new. Registration is a key step in ensuring these appliances remain safe and functional for as long as possible.
Encouragingly, energy efficiency remains a priority for all consumers. A significant, 80% say energy efficiency is an important factor when purchasing a new appliance, with 65% checking its environmental credentials before buying.
Sarah Wilkinson, Head of Prevention, emphasises the importance of registration: “Many people may have picked up a bargain during the New Year sales or are considering buying second-hand items to save money and support the environment.
“Some might also be using appliances previously owned by family members or items already installed when moving into a new home.
“Registering ensures manufacturers can contact you if a safety repair or recall is required. This is especially crucial for those living in rented or housing association properties, where appliances are often already in place.
“Now is the perfect time to register household appliances. It’s a simple step to reduce the risk of house fires and enjoy greater peace of mind. Care for your appliance and protect your home.”
While attitudes towards appliance efficiency are improving, there remains a need for greater awareness of the safety benefits of registration. Recalls on home appliances are rare, but equipment issues can arise over time. A simple, free in-home adjustment by a qualified engineer can extend the safe lifespan of these machines. Unlike cars, for which registering details is mandatory, many valuable home appliances remain untraceable due to non-registration.
The AMDEA Register My Appliance portal provides a straightforward solution. This online platform offers access to over 70 leading brands, many of which accept the registration of both new and older appliances.
