Road and Water Safety
Keeping people safe on our roads and around water is a key part of prevention. We work with partners to reduce the likelihood of serious injury or death by improving awareness, influencing behaviour, and targeting activity at those most at risk.
This work aligns to our prevention model, using risk data to target interventions and delivering consistent, year-round activity. Activity is focused on reducing incidents and harm, rather than delivering standalone awareness campaigns.
Understanding risk
Humberside has an extensive road and water network, including major transport routes and a wide range of waterways across urban and rural areas. These environments present ongoing risks, particularly during periods of increased use.
Risk is influenced by behaviour, including speed, distraction, alcohol use and risk-taking around water. These behaviours increase the likelihood of serious incidents and fatalities, particularly among younger people and other higher-risk groups.
What we currently do
We deliver targeted road and water safety activity aligned to identified risk:
- Work with the Safer Roads Humber partnership to deliver coordinated education and intervention activity to reduce collisions and serious injuries.
- Deliver targeted education programmes to high-risk groups to influence behaviour and improve understanding of risk.
- Engage communities in water safety through targeted interventions in high-risk locations.
- Support national campaigns to reinforce key safety messages at times of increased risk.
- This activity reduces the likelihood of incidents and supports safer behaviours in high-risk environments.
What we will do
We will strengthen this approach to maximise impact and align with our prevention delivery model:
- Implement the Road Safety Vision Zero Strategic Plan with partners, focusing on reducing those killed or seriously injured on our roads.
- Expand water safety education and interventions in high-risk locations to reduce accidental drowning.
- Strengthen partnership delivery to ensure consistent, targeted activity aligned to identified risk.
