A recent house fire caused by a faulty electric blanket has prompted Humberside Fire and Rescue Service to remind residents of the need to check their condition before use in what remains of winter.

A couple in Hibaldstow, North Lincolnshire were treated for smoke inhalation after a fire broke out in their bedroom on the evening of Wednesday 10 March. Thankfully they suffered no serious injuries.

Electric blankets are still widely used across the region. Fires started by these products are rare, but electrical faults can occur if they are stored incorrectly or operated outside of manufacturer's instructions.

Visit the Electric Blankets page on the HFRS website to find tips on safe storage and what common faults to look out for.
