Bonfire Night is a highlight of autumn, but it’s also one of the busiest nights for our firefighters. The safest way to enjoy it is by attending an organised firework display and saves you on the tidying up afterwards.

Humberside Fire and Rescue service is working with Humberside Police and local Councils to spot any illegal bonfires being built. Additionally, we're making sure fireworks are sold safely and legally.

If you ever suspect someone is selling fireworks illegally, you can report it to Trading Standards at 0808 223 1133 or on their website. For issues with fly-tipping, reach out to your local Council:

  • East Riding of Yorkshire Council - 01482 393939
  • Hull City Council – 01482 300300
  • North East Lincolnshire Council – 01472 313131
  • North Lincolnshire Council – 01724 297000

Fireworks and bonfires can significantly impact the environment, wildlife, and air quality. Whenever possible, attend organised events to reduce the impact. Keep pets and wildlife in mind by reducing loud fireworks or timing displays responsibly.

Key safety reminders:

  • Never use Bonfire Night to burn rubbish - take it to your local Council’s waste and recycling centre.
  • Store wheelie bins securely to prevent deliberate fire setting.
  • Buy fireworks with the UKCA mark from reputable sellers.
  • Keep fireworks in a closed box.
  • Follow the instructions on each firework.
  • Light fireworks at arm's length.
  • Stay a safe distance from them once they're lit.
  • Never go back to a lit firework.
  • Never throw fireworks.
  • Fireworks cannot be set off in public streets or places.
  • For your pets' wellbeing, keep them indoors during fireworks displays.
