With celebrations beginning on 29 January to welcome the Lunar New Year, the Year of the Snake, Humberside Fire and Rescue Service is sharing advice to help communities across the region celebrate safely.

Sarah Wilkinson, Head of Prevention, said: “We’re wishing all our communities a joyful and safe Lunar New Year with loved ones. As this can be a busy and exciting time, we’re encouraging everyone to prioritise fire safety during their celebrations."

Our safety tips

  • Consider using LED candles instead of traditional wax candles. They are not only safer but also save you from having to relight them after leaving the room.
  • When cooking for family and friends, always keep an eye on what’s on the hob. If you need to step away, take pans off the heat to avoid accidents.
  • We strongly advise against using flying (sky) lanterns as part of your celebrations. These lanterns pose a serious fire hazard and can cause significant harm to wildlife habitats and properties.
  • If you’re planning to use fireworks, follow the safety instructions closely. Never return to a lit firework, even if it hasn’t gone off, it could still explode and cause serious injury.

By keeping these tips in mind, everyone can enjoy a safe and happy start to the Year of the Snake.
