In 2023, the Service launched its Fire Cadet Programme, offering young people across the Humber region a chance to engage with their local fire service and develop essential skills such as communication, confidence, teamwork, and initiative.
Since then, 56 cadets have successfully completed the programme, earning the National Fire Cadet Award Level 1. Their hard work resulted in a passing out parade where they demonstrated their newly acquired skills to proud families and friends.
The value of the training was highlighted by a life-saving incident involving one of the cadets. A mother shared her heartfelt gratitude, saying, “I just wanted to thank you for teaching him a skill that has saved a child’s life today.
“A friend of his got a sweet stuck in his throat while they were playing. My son saw him turning blue, performed the abdominal thrust manoeuvre and the sweet flew out.
“They were playing outside and it might have been too late by the time an ambulance arrived. We are so proud of our son and grateful for the life-saving skills he has learned. Those skills saved a life."
Chief Fire Officer Phil Shillito expressed his pride as the Fire Cadets received their certificates, stating, “It is such a proud moment to see so many of our Fire Cadets at our headquarters today and to celebrate all they have achieved over the past year.
“I hope this is the starting point for many, to pursue a career where they help our communities and share their skills, and experiences with others.”
Sarah Wilkinson, Head of Prevention said, “The success of the Fire Cadet Programme not only highlights the importance of life-saving skills but also showcases the significant contributions young people can make to their communities, as well as how we can encourage and support young people across the region. I am incredibly proud of the work by the Fire Cadet Instructors, whose dedication and expertise have been key in shaping the future of these young Fire Cadets.”
