Paternity: Frequently Asked Questions

How much paternity pay will I receive?

HFRS offer enhance paternity pay. The statutory paternity leave and pay is 2 weeks at £187.18 or 90% of wages – whichever is lower. HFRS provide eligible employees with 2 weeks at full pay (which is inclusive of the statutory element) and then a further 2 weeks at half pay should the employee choose to take it.

What will the half pay element of pay look like?

To calculate how you will be financially impacted by the half pay element of paternity leave, you can use the following calculation: “Annual Salary / 52 x 2” and then deduct this amount from your monthly pay. Please note this will provide an estimate of the financial impact and a more detailed illustration can be requested via Payroll.

I am On-Call, how will my pay be impacted and can an estimation be provided?

You should contact On-Call support who can advise and provide you an estimation into what your pay will look like. The pay is likely to be adjusted in the month following your leave depending on the dates of your leave.

How will my pension be affected by paternity leave?

Further information can be obtained from the Pension Provider or the Finance Team. Members of the Firefighters’ Pension Scheme should consult West Yorkshire Pension Fund and members of the Local Government Pension Scheme should contact East Riding Pension Fund for more specific details.

I am dual contract, how will it affect me?

If you are dual contract then it will be assumed that the leave you take will be taken simultaneously in both roles. If you want to only take leave in one role, you should discuss this with On-Call Support and HR. Please note, once you have taken the leave in your substantive role, you will not then be able to take leave again at a different time for your other role.
